Can’t Stand The Rain: I can’t stand the rain, Washing me down again. Soaking the soul of me, Drenching my dignity. I won’t cry no more, I gotta let it go, But I still hold the pain, So I can’t stand the rain. You know I Cursed the Sun. Burning my back as I run And yet I’d rather be, Baking in misery. You know I laughed at the snow, I stood out in the cold, And you know I’d do it again, ‘cos man I can’t stand the rain. And you know it, So don’t doubt it, Your love, I can’t live without it, I see it, I believe it, ‘Cos your love’s got the best of me And one time long ago, we couldn’t let it go, All those sunny days, Now this far down the line, with love running out of time, All it does rain. I can’t stand the rain. Falling like tears again Wash down my memory. Drowning the hope in me. So I’m a lonely man, With just the night on my hands. And I can take the blame, But I can’t take this rain. I wouldn’t lie to you. There ain’t a thing I can do. Wish I could turn back time, Get to walk in the sweet sunshine. And I could hold you close, I wouldn’t ever let you go. Now nothings gonna be the same. And I can’t stand this rain And you know it, So don’t doubt it, Your love, I can’t live without it, I see it, I believe it, ‘Cos your love’s got the best of me And one time long ago, we couldn’t let it go, All those sunny days, Now this far down the line, with love running out of time, All it does rain. I can’t stand the rain, Washing me down again. Soaking the soul of me, Drenching my dignity. I won’t cry no more, I gotta let it go, But I still hold the pain, So I can’t stand the rain. And you know it, So don’t doubt it, Your love, I can’t live without it, I see it, I believe it, ‘Cos your love’s got the best of me And one time long ago, we couldn’t let it go, All those sunny days, Now this far down the line, with love running out of time, All it does rain.

Tomorrows Gonna Hurt You: Tomorrows Gonna Hurt You, Hurt you more, than you’ve ever hurt before Tomorrows Gonna Hurt You, Hurt you so bad. Tomorrows gonna hurt you, Break your heart, and burn your soul away, Tomorrows Gonna hate you for Yesterday Tomorrows Gonna Hurt You, when you see what you’ve done When the morning brings you round, and they tell you she’s gone Tomorrows gonna hurt you, Break your heart, and burn your soul away, Tomorrows Gonna hate you for Yesterday And listen to the rain falling, Falling like a thousand tears, Listen to your name calling, Calling out across these fields of home. Tomorrows Gonna Hurt You, Hurt you more, than you’ve ever hurt before Tomorrows Gonna Hurt You, Hurt you so bad. Tomorrows Gonna Hurt You, Break your heart, and burn your soul away, Tomorrows Gonna hate you for Yesterday And listen to the rain falling, Falling like a thousand tears, Listen to your name calling, Rain and Tears after all these years…

We Got the Love: Some people were born to sit by the River Dreaming of places they’ve never seen Drop a fishing line into the water Let the River flow while they sit and dream Some people were made to go out and get it Make it big in the city or up on TV Make a deal or an offer to make their life better Make more money and power than they’ll ever need But You and Me We don’t need much of anything.. We don’t need to…. Chalk one up Make the gain Score the goal or Force the win No We don’t need a thing, Cos we got the Love. Some people were made to lead the others Some people were born to Rally the youth Stand up high, On a platform Let the whole world know The universal truth Some people Were born to hurt one another Live their whole life stuck underneath a cloud Never knowing why, They felt so lonely Never really speaking their love out loud But You and Me We don’t need much of anything.. We don’t need to…. Beat the clock Have our say Bring it home or Seize the day No We don’t need a thing, Cos we got the love…

The wind Sings Songs: It’s like a Misty Morning Or a walk in the Rain Fills you up with the breath of Life Makes you whole again Reaches right down inside you Gets right down low Lights you up in the darkest places It plugs into your soul Cos the Wind sings songs And it knows where you belong And it blows across your soul No matter who you are So take a Dance in the long grass Or sing a song to the stars Or take a Bath in the Sunshine Healing up your Scars It’s like the sounds of the Forest Where the wildflowers grow Makes you want to run pure and free It makes your spirit glow Cos the Wind sings songs And it knows where you belong And it blows across your soul No matter who you are

Donya 03:50
Donya Sometimes the saddest song, Reminds us where we came from. You know I love you Donya girl And Donya I can’t bring myself to say your name, Cos when I do it hurts to see your shame just let it go Donya girl And Donya I can’t wait ‘til I can see the day, when you can smile and laugh those tears away Try to help it Donya girl You were just a child Hitching a ride With nowhere important to go And time on your side And now it seems as though You’re hurting for what you know Those days were long ago Be gentle on yourself Sometimes the saddest song, Reminds us where we came from. You know I love you Donya girl And Donya You don’t have to try to please them all, You’ll realise the world is much too small Leave ‘em be, Donya girl And Donya I don’t ever want to see your pain, Don’t ever want to see those tears again Dry your eyes, Donya girl

A Trick of Light: She bites like Heroin, get’s down deep under my skin Burns away my discipline… She cuts the soul of me, and strips my pride so tenderly, And carves away my dignity… But Truth resides beyond emotion, Love and hate are vanities, What turns the tides and rolls the ocean Defines us by it’s Gravity She tests my boundaries, her words are all but heresy, But I covet her delinquency, She wont stop the things she do, and God knows why I’d want her to, The Shamen and the Ingénue But Truth resides beyond emotion, Love and hate are vanities, What turns the tides and rolls the ocean Defines us by it’s Gravity And fate conspires to bring me down, My logic fails when she’s around, I see her face in every book, her picture every place I look, And I know nothing as it seems, within the dream. But Truth resides beyond emotion, Love and hate are vanities, What turns the tides and rolls the ocean Defines us by it’s Gravity Was born beneath it’s Gravity.

I Think You Know. At the edges of the night, And at the break of the day I think you sense, What I want to convey, At the point of silence, Where the shadows play I think you know In the midst of laughter, Or the edge of tears In a silent glance, Or an irrational fear, In the words unspoken, After all these years, I think you know. I think you know, Deep down inside, I think you know, What I want you to know I think you’ll find all the answers, Deep down inside, I think you know. Across a canvas of moments, Through a constant flow, Or a gentle liaison, And the afterglow, I hope that you get it, And it continues to grow I think you know. I think you know, Deep down inside, I think you know, What I want you to know I think you’ll find all the answers, Deep down inside, I think you know.

Stop Looking for Rainbows: This World don’t owe you nothing, so they say; But You keep on pushing anyway.. You sold your empathy Right down the line And now you’re running out of time Stop Looking for Rainbows Start counting your friends Cos who knows where the time goes We only know when it ends Start looking for Moments Stop placing the blame Start writing the story, Where the hero bears your name. And It’s just great you’re putting in the time And your perfect visions all aligned You balance sacrifice, With Your lonely life And now you face your last deadline Stop Looking for Rainbows Start counting your friends Cos who knows where the time goes We only know when it ends Start looking for Moments Stop placing the blame Start writing the story, Where the hero bears your name.

Lately Ain’t Been Lucky: Lately Ain’t been lucky Lucky’s not for me, Seems the Blues, have gotten used To hanging where I be… Lately Ain’t Been Lucky Lucky’s not my style, Lord it’s true, seems all I can do to stop me from crying like a little child Used to be I had Sunshine, On a cloudy day Bring down a spirit on me, Chase those blues away… Used to be I had happiness, Light up all my days, Now all I got is misery, Raining down on my parade Lately Ain’t been lucky Lucky Ain’t my scene Seems that old cloud, Keeps chasing me round, And he follows where I’ve been Used to be I had Sunshine, On a cloudy day Bring down a spirit on me, Chase those blues away… Used to be I had happiness, Light up all my days, Now all I got is misery, Raining down on my parade Lately Ain’t been lucky Lucky Ain’t my scene Seems that old cloud, Keeps chasing me round, And he follows where I’ve been
10.
The Art of Being Nowhere: God knows I’ll never understand, The nights we wander hand in hand You reach for Candlelight, And I fear the flame, So we stand in Shadows once again It’s the Art of being Nowhere It’s the Space between me and you It’s the Art of being Nowhere What are we supposed to do God knows I’ll never comprehend, How hard we fight to just stay friends But we, won’t fight for the Money, And We, Don’t need the pain So we’re standing here again It’s the Art of being Nowhere It’s the Space between me and you It’s the Art of being Nowhere What are we supposed to do And Sometime, Someday, Some Place, Some way It won’t really matter at all. God Knows I’ll never recognize, The distance deep behind your eyes I find the subtle teeth, And you match our wounds But we never really compromise It’s the Art of being Nowhere It’s the Space between me and you It’s the Art of being Nowhere What are we supposed to do
11.
I Don’t See It Like You Do: I don’t see it like you do. I don’t see it through those eyes. And I don’t want a point of view, That cannot change or compromise. When all is said and all is done, When only words are left to you, Will you remember me today? Will you recall you heard me say? I don’t see it like you do. I don’t see it like you do. I can’t focus without light. Though the tenets you hold true, Can keep you peaceful in the night. With righteous rage, your battle’s won. When blood is dust and blown from view. Will you remember me this way? Will you recall you heard me say? I don’t see it like you do. What if your battle hymns to glory, become your brilliant mistake? What if your stand for truth and justice, was never really yours to take? What if your God and your religion, is a smaller piece of a greater truth? What if your God of understanding, doesn’t see it like you do?
12.
Bring The Night Alive: It wouldn’t matter now, if they shut the whole world down, If they turned the big light out and walked away, Cos I’ll die inside the memory of how you looked tonight, And I never would believe that I could be so sorry now… You Bring the Night Alive, I’m watching as you walk away, You Bring the Night Alive, There’s nothing left for me to say, You Bring the Night Alive, Shining till the break of day You Bring the Night Alive. It wouldn’t make a difference, to the way I feel tonight, If they shoot the moon and blow the stars away, ‘Cos nothing really matters now I’ve pushed your love away, And I never would believe that could be so sorry now…. You Bring the Night Alive, I’m watching as you walk away, You Bring the Night Alive, There’s nothing left for me to say, You Bring the Night Alive,
13.
Manhattan In The Rain: Nothings ever gonna be the same, Now I’m heading for home again, Can’t forget my pain, Manhattan in the Rain Nothing really worth the fighting for, A love turned rotten to the core, Nothing to remember her for, But Manhattan, as the rain pours. Seems this rain will never end, Doubt my heart will ever mend Seems I’m going down again The same old road that leads me nowhere. Nothings ever gonna be the same, Riding home on this night train, Only memories remain, Manhattan in the rain. I’ve never seen them shine so bright, The way the lights shone out tonight, Nothing left to fight, Manhattan washed me clean tonight. Seems this rain will never end, Doubt my heart will ever mend Seems I’m going down again The same old road that leads me nowhere.
14.
The Highest Hills: I never knew, a better time. I never drew, a bitter breath. I should’ve known, good things don’t last, It’s no surprise, I should’ve guessed. But if you need, my company, Just spare a thought, and set it free CH/ And I’ll be… Over the Highest Hills, Swimming the Darkest Sea, Running the Longest road, That’s where I’ll be, I’ll be Sailing by the stars And Blowing with the breeze, Flying the big blue skies, And though I’m gone, I’ll never leave. This simple scar, upon my heart, Will always say, how wrong we are, To promise love, an ever-open door, A Simple task, an easy road.. But if you need, a flame to light the dark, Or Tinder for the spark, keep me in your heart, CH/ And I’ll be…. Over the Highest Hills…
15.
Think I Could Fall in Love: Why don’t you hate me for the things I say? ‘Cos this would be alright on any other day, But I know how I feel, and I think I could fall in love. Don’t understand how you can be this way, Every other moment in every single day, But I know how it feels and I think I could fall in love. I don’t understand. How this happens, it wasn’t planned, How I tried so hard to stop it, you’ll never know… Don’t understand how you can be this way, Every other moment in every single day, But I know how it feels and I think I could fall in love. Pulling me down in a sea of emotion, I’m drowning in the heat of your stare. Love is the easy breathing darling, I want to breathe, but I don’t dare. Why don’t you hate me for the things I say? ‘Cos this would be alright on any other day, But I know how I feel, and I think I could fall in love. Pulling me down in a sea of emotion, I’m drowning in the heat of your stare. Love is the easy breathing darling, I want to breathe, but I don’t dare.
16.
Lifeline 04:18
Lifeline: When the Dawn breaks over the dark hills, When the rain falls out at sea, When the wind blows cold on the ocean, I need your love to cover me. It’s like a lifeline, I don’t need nothing more, You give me just enough, to pull me to shore, Your love’s a lifeline, That’s what it means to me, Keeps me from drowning in the cold cold sea. I don’t know, and you won’t say, Just what makes us feel this way, All I do, is reach for you, The lifeline comes my way. When the sun burns hard on my shoulder, When the wind bites down so deep, When the snow falls soft in the forest I need your love to cover me It’s like a lifeline, I don’t need nothing more, You give me just enough, to pull me to shore, Your love’s a lifeline, That’s what it means to me, Keeps me from drowning in the cold cold sea. I don’t know, and you won’t say, Just what makes us feel this way, All I do, is reach for you, The lifeline comes my way.

One Day 04:46
One Day: Why do you wanna hurt me? Why do you want to say the things you do, Why’ve I got to feel so sad, What have I done so bad to you? Why do you wanna cut right through me? Why do you wanna see my pain, Why’ve I gotta feel so bad, What have you got to gain? And One Day, I guess I’m gonna smile about it, Yeah One Day, It wont matter any more. Yesterday, I couldn’t even think about it. But tonight I think I’m going to let you go Every little move you’re making, Every little word you say, I see it in your eyes, I see right through this masquerade So why do you wanna hurt me? It’s a cruel cruel game you play Why do you wanna break my heart? I gotta take this pain away So One Day, I guess I’m gonna smile about it, Yeah One Day, It wont matter any more. Yesterday, I couldn’t even think about it. But tonight I think I’m going to let you go
18.
What If He Came Back: Well I know it seems a lifetime since he held you in his hands, And I do believe you love me for today, Oh but you don’t see your face change at the mention of his name, And it’s killing me to give my heart away… What if he came back? What if he told you he was sorry? What if he came back, What if he said he couldn’t live without your love And all your tender grace. Well I know you say he hurt you, in a thousand different ways, And I really do believe you when you say, That you’re happy to be free from all that jealousy and pain, But you keep your phone line open just the same.. What if he came back? What if he told you he was sorry? What if he came back, What if he said he couldn’t live without your love And all your tender grace. Well I don’t believe in miracles and I don’t believe in faith, In fact the only thing I do believe is true, Are your eyes and your smile and the way you look tonight, And you’ll never know how much I wanted you.. But What if he came back? What if he said that he was sorry? What if he came back, What if he said he couldn’t live without your love And all your tender grace.

Winter Through the Mirror: And I’m Desperately Happy, And Palpably sane, I see Winter through the mirror, Come to take me home again…. I see Winter through the Mirror And Legacies of old. A picture of The Road Home And a Sunset. Pulling back the Curtain I recognise, A Quiet Place A place I Cherish These Days. And I’m Desperately Happy, And Palpably sane, I see Winter through the mirror, Come to take me home again…. I see Winter through the Mirror And pictures of moonlight Songs from the old days And an Echo, Open up the windows Let the cold air through A shiver inside The soul. And I’m Cautiously Ecstatic, And visibly pained I see Winter through the Mirror Come to take me home again. I see Winter through the mirror, And glimpses of shadows The Words of a Poet And an old Yellow Bear. By the side of a river There’s an elderly hand And a fish that darts away Like memories And I’m Manifestly hidden And Patently vague I see Winter through the Mirror Come to take me home again I’m evidently doubtful And plainly arcane I see Winter through the mirror Come to take me home again Come to take me home again

Rejoice in the Music: Sometimes in the middle of the night I get to thinking, How the paths once taken revealed our call. And how we never really chose an open highway or a roadmap We just follow the road where our feet fall I spent hours in the bedroom making solo’s on an old guitar, Trying to bend my way to some kind of truth. I knew then that they’d never make an academic man of me, I knew the value of a so called misspent youth. Back then I could hurt so bad it was hard to breathe, The only place to hide were those six strings Didn’t matter what they said about me wasting everybody’s time I knew I had a chance to make that old guitar sing Sometimes in the middle of the day I stop to wonder Remembering the Boy I used to Be And how I never understood what it meant to be responsible Or how the centre of the Universe wasn’t just me.. But I believed in the power of the Rhythm and the Melody And I set my Metronome to a different beat I just decided not to listen to the people that were hounding me I put my faith in the music that moved my feet. Back then I could hurt so bad it was hard to breathe, The only place to hide were those six strings Didn’t matter what they said about me wasting everybody’s time I knew I had a chance to make that old guitar sing Looking back at the places and the people that have filled my life I know I couldn’t ever wish for more than I received And everyday I rejoice in the Music that fills my life, The music gave me everything that I could have ever believed So I want you to Rejoice in the Music Rejoice Rejoice in the Music Rejoice Rejoice in the Music Rejoice

Addendum 04:29
Addendum: A small child asks me, “What is it that you believe?” Him with a head full of magic and angels, that watch him while he sleeps. And tooth fairies and Father Christmas, and Monsters in the deep. And Shaunie and Grandpa Mark in Heaven above. So I reach for the thinkers, I’ve read over time. For Marx and Jung and Wittgenstein For Dickens and Dawkins and Hitchens and James I drank ‘em down like fine red wine. But when Bibles and textbooks and scholarly words, Are finally put away, As I gaze down into those innocent eyes, Just this single truth remains… I believe in Love. I believe in Love. I believe in Love. And to all of you cynics, doubters and fools Wise men and prophets, and government mules, Believers and Heretics, Teachers and Thieves, I offer this one relief. To science and scholars that can’t be denied, To every religion pulling hope from the sky, To the paupers and Princes, and beggars and Kings I have but one belief… I believe in love. I believe in Love. I believe in Love.

about

SONGS FROM A HEATHEN HEART
So here we are in 2024 with an eclectic, eccentric collection of songs I’ve recorded (mostly) over the last 6 months.
Some of these are brand new, with experiments in sound design to the fore, and some I found in my ideas book from when I was 23 years old. I’ll leave you to try and decide which are which. (Hint: I was in my Twenties during the Eighties!)
I’m deeply grateful to my son Danny for taking up some of the heavy lifting vocals wise.
He really has an outstanding voice, and I should also mention Lana and Becky who both stepped in to lend backing vox on a couple of tracks.
There’s not much more to say really, other than I dedicate it to my Glorious little ball of energy, my Grandson Jude.
A shout out as always to my travelling companion down many a musical sidetrack Ian Foster. The time we spend walking together in the mornings never fails to inspire as we pick over our musical heritage and look to the future also.
Finally, love to all the family. Lana as ever. Rebecca, Mike and Beks, and Danny, Emily & Jude.
I love you all from the bottom of my Heathen Heart.
Peace on the inside, Love on the outside……

Steve.
